Backroads and Ballfields: Oklahoma Adds Aiden Choo, Shin-Soo's Son

By ·

Oklahoma had a busy week on the recruiting trail. A day after shortstop Carter Hadnot picked the Sooners, Aiden Choo followed on Oct. 21, announcing his commitment on Instagram.

Choo is a junior at Southlake Carroll in Texas who plays the outfield and pitches. He bats and throws right-handed, and he is the son of Shin-Soo Choo, who spent the last seven of his 16 big league seasons with the Texas Rangers.

"I'm grateful and excited to announce my commitment to the University of Oklahoma to continue my academic and baseball career," Choo wrote in the post. "First, I want to thank my family for their endless love, support and sacrifices. Thank you for always believing in me and giving me every opportunity to chase this dream."

He closed the post with, "Thank you Oklahoma coaching staff for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to be a Sooner. I can't wait for this next chapter! Boomer Sooner!"

From Bradenton to Southlake

Choo spent his sophomore season in Florida with IMG Academy. He hit .371 there with a .487 on-base percentage, five home runs and 15 stolen bases, and did not make an error. He's back in the Dallas-Fort Worth area now at Carroll, a program with five state titles and a playoff streak that dates to 1999.

He has company on the Carroll roster. A few of his Dragons teammates in the 2028 class are already on our board.

The Measurables

Most of his numbers on record come from Prep Baseball's Future Games on July 22. There he posted a max exit velocity of 103.5 mph, a max batted-ball distance of 400 feet, a 6.61 60-yard dash and a max of 92 mph throwing from the outfield. On the mound, he touched 88 mph at a June 4 event and worked mostly 85 to 88.

Those are big tools for a player with two high school seasons still ahead of him, and he's one of the more interesting two-way names in the 2028 class on our board. Prep Baseball lists him as an outfielder first, and so do we.

The Name

His father was a career .275 hitter with 1,671 hits and 218 home runs in the majors. Shin-Soo Choo was born in Busan, South Korea, debuted in 2005 and made his only All-Star team in 2018 with Texas. He played his last big league game in 2020.

Oklahoma's Week

The Sooners won the national title in June, beating North Carolina 13-2 in the deciding game of the College World Series finals. Skip Johnson's staff followed that by landing Hadnot, a switch-hitting shortstop from Southern California, on Oct. 20 and Choo a day later.

Hadnot is a 2027 prospect and Choo is a 2028, so they won't arrive in Norman at the same time. But two days, two big names is a good week for any staff.
