Alex McFarlane
Pitching scouting report · 80Grade
Scouting summary
Given his upper-90s fastball, lively movement, and two distinct breaking balls, McFarlane has the raw arsenal to impact a major-league bullpen if the command takes a modest step forward. The realistic path is consolidating as a multi-inning or setup reliever who attacks with sinker/slider and flashes a usable changeup against lefties, rather than returning to a traditional starter’s role. His ceiling is a high-leverage setup arm who can miss bats with power stuff, while the floor is an up-down reliever who struggles to throw enough strikes to stick. Continued health post–Tommy John and incremental improvements in strike throwing will dictate whether he reaches the upper band of that outcome or settles into a middle-relief profile.
