T.J. Nichols

Pitching scouting report · 80Grade

Scouting summary

Nichols has enough velocity and a usable slider to remain a legitimate bullpen candidate, but the combination of average fastball movement, inconsistent command, and elevated home-run exposure makes a durable rotation outcome difficult to support. The best path is a relief conversion in which his 95-97 mph fastball and mid-to-high-80s slider are used more aggressively, with the changeup retained as a third option against opposite-handed hitters. He could reach the majors as a middle or up-and-down reliever if the release point tightens and the slider holds its shape, but the current evidence points to a modest ceiling and a meaningful risk of stalling in Triple-A.

Projected MLB role: up-down reliever
