Joe Whitman

Pitching scouting report · 80Grade

Scouting summary

Given his combination of a playable fastball, a potentially above-average slider, and a usable changeup, Whitman projects most realistically as a back-end to low mid-rotation starter if command and consistency tick up. The path to that outcome runs through refining fastball location, especially to his glove-side lane, and maintaining slider shape while building more confidence in the changeup against righties. His present stuff and strike-throwing underpin the chance for an average major league contributor, but the below-average overall minor league run prevention to date tempers expectations. If command stalls or the fastball continues to play more fringe, he could still slot into a multi-inning relief role where the slider is leveraged more aggressively. Continued health and incremental gains in execution over the next season or two will largely determine whether he sticks in a rotation or shifts to the bullpen.

Projected MLB role: #4 starter
