Maxwell's Fastball Reminder at Louisville
Zach Maxwell (AAA, RHP, Rank: 34) threw three innings of two-run ball at Louisville this week, scattering three hits and striking out five without issuing a walk on 50 pitches, 30 of which went for strikes. The walk-free appearance is the headline: Maxwell's 30-grade command has been the persistent obstacle throughout his minor league climb and into his early MLB looks, and any outing where he goes three innings without a free pass is worth flagging. He also generated nine swinging misses out of those 50 pitches, a 29.3 percent whiff rate over his last 30 days that tracks with what his arsenal is capable of producing when the ball finds the zone. A four-seam fastball sitting 99-102 mph, a 60-grade slider with genuine late bite, and a cutter-sweeper combination that offers multiple glove-side shapes give him the raw ingredients to miss bats at any level. The issue has always been putting enough of those pitches in play counts to make them matter.
The broader 2026 picture is complicated. At Triple-A, Maxwell carries a 4.66 ERA across 46.1 innings with a 15.3 percent walk rate and a 27.4 percent strikeout rate, numbers that look almost identical to his 2025 Louisville line. The MLB results have been rougher: an 8.31 ERA in 13 innings with Cincinnati this year, compared to a cleaner 4.50 ERA and a 30.2 percent strikeout rate in 10 innings last September. The strike rate over his last 30 days sits at 49.7 percent, up slightly from the 47.3 percent full-season mark, and the nine whiffs in three innings this week give some texture to a stretch that had otherwise featured a 7.88 ERA. He is 25, the stuff is genuinely plus-plus at the top, and a setup reliever outcome remains on the table. But the command grade is 30 for real reasons, and the walk numbers have not budged in two full seasons. A few more outings like this one won't change the projection, but they keep the ceiling from being written off entirely.
Quick Hits
- Zach McCambley (MLB, RHP, Rank: 28) · was recalled by Cincinnati on September 19, capping a strong Triple-A run. He posted a 2.87 ERA across 37.2 innings at Louisville and a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings at Jacksonville earlier this season, a combined 72 strikeouts against 36 walks in 64.1 innings of Triple-A work. The September roster expansion gave him the opportunity, and the underlying numbers suggest he earned it.
- Victor Acosta (A+, SS, Rank: 52) · was activated off the 7-day IL on September 16 after missing roughly six weeks at Dayton. No game logs have surfaced since his return, so there is nothing to evaluate yet on the field. In 166 plate appearances at High-A before going down, he was slashing with four home runs, five steals, and a solid .350 on-base percentage. The tools are real enough that getting healthy and logging some late-season reps is a reasonable outcome for a player with his profile.
