Zach Maxwell

Pitching scouting report · 80Grade

Scouting summary

Given his plus-plus fastball and multiple power breakers, Maxwell projects as a high-octane bullpen arm with the ceiling of a setup reliever and occasional closer looks when everything is synced up. The floor is more of an up-and-down or middle innings reliever if the command never gets to fringe-average, as his walk rates have remained elevated into the upper minors and early MLB time. Continued incremental improvements in strike-throwing, along with refinement in differentiating the slider, cutter, and sweeper shapes, could allow the stuff to play at its peak against big league hitters. Durability is supported by his huge frame and history of handling heavy relief workloads, so the main developmental path is tightening location without sacrificing too much of the raw velocity and movement that make him special.

Projected MLB role: up-down setup reliever
